Samsung PN50A550 50-Inch 1080p Plasma HDTV Review
What can one say that hasn’t already been said? This television is amazing, I’ve owned mine since Feb 09. I had to refuse the first shipment due to the glass being cracked in several places, but Diedre helped me out big time. Hope I spelled the name right. I bought this with the intention of using the NFL Shop Rebate and Amazon came through making sure I didn’t miss the deadline. Now if only NFL Shop would get my size of jersey. Anyway, If you’re looking for a very nice HDTV, this is it. I’ve seen some complain about the speakers, but I think they’re just fine. I also switch between them and my Samsung HT-Z310 Home Theater System (for movies). I originally had my eye on a Panasonic, but when I saw the two together, Samsung won.

Defective plasma – Elliot R. Royce – New England
I imagine it’s too late to warn viewers that this TV’s plasma screen gave out about 18 months after purchase. Otherwise it’s an excellent TV.
Lifelike picture quality – Andrew Brooman –
In a darker room, watching this TV is like watching real-life. When I watch my old LCD, my mind knows I am watching TV; but when I watch this TV, my mind is tricked into thinking I am there. So, yes-it looks stylish, has the features you need, etc. but that is not what distinguishes this TV–its the lifelike picture quality.
died – T. Love – Texas
This tv had a great picture but completely died right after the warranty period was up. This is my second samsung to do this. I am now permanently out on samsung!
Great while it lasted – Run and Dance – Middle GA
I, too, chose this TV because of the great rating it got on the Consumer Reports website. The price just keeps on dropping. I paid about 40 for it in Feb 2009. It was a great TV and picture while it lasted. Five months in and all it’s good for now is a boat anchor. No power. It cycles on and off, and the red light flashes, but that’s it. I tried the troubleshooting guide with no success I called Samsung and they are sending someone out on their dime to fix it. Stayed tuned for results of that visit in the comments section here. One thing I didn’t like was that it wouldn’t automatically adjust to the picture size it was showing. My dad’s Panasonic had a feature where if the picture format was 4:3 it would adjust after a few seconds to fill up the whole screen. SyFy and AMC channels show a lot of stuff that is formatted for a 4:3 screen in 19:6 letterbox format On this TV there is a BIG black border around the whole picture. Getting it to fit on this TV’s screen is a nightmare. Something is either cut off on the sides or the top and bottom are black and the picture is stretched. There are two zoom settings, but you can’t adjust the size of the zoom, just the position, so you get to choose which two sides you want to cut off. It does have a cool feature where if the TV is turned off and you have a DVD HDMI connection, all you have to do is load the DVD and the TV turns itself on. But for now, it’s dead. Samsung customer service was excellent, no wait time and I called at 11PM on a Friday night!! Stay tuned…

Samsung HPT5064 50-Inch Plasma HDTV Review

After doing TONS of research and going back and forth on 1080 vs. 720, I went for this beauty. I don’t have a Blue-Ray player and I don’t own a PS3 (yet) so I couldn’t take advantage of 1080. Broadcast HD TV is 720 anyway. I have owned this set for about 10 months and at the time the same size LCD was 0 more and the screens on the LCD’s of the day just were not as bright as plasma IMO.
Best thing to do, go to your local electronic store, compare TV’s side by side and then buy it on Amazon. First of all Amazon rocks! Customer service is awesome. 2 weeks after we bought the TV it dropped 0 and when I called Amazon they gave me the difference back! This is only good for up to 30 days after your purchase date. No tax for us in CA, and Free white glove delivery. TV came on time, delivery company called me to schedule an appointment for delivery. The delivery guy brought the TV in and help set it up and even cleaned up the mess.
TV was a breeze to setup. I have HD Comcast cable running in via composite cables, a Wii via composite, a media center PC into the VGA port and a DVD player plugged in through one of the HDMI pots. Couldn’t get coax to work directly connected to the TV but no big deal, I watch it through my cable box anyway.
I read online that you had to “break in” a plasma or you would have burn in early on. I had the TV’s settings dialed in to my room brightness but still kept it at 50% brightness. Even at that setting the TV was still VERY bright! Yes it is a plasma TV and YES there will be burn in at some point. After playing Guitar Hero III for hours with friends yes there is a ghost of the game burned into the screen. Flip the channel to any HD FULL SCREEN channel and in about 10 minutes, its all gone.
Early on we would run the anti-burn feature on the TV when we went to bed to keep burn in from being permanent. Set the sleep timer for 30-60 min, and start the scrolling anti-burn feature. The next morning when we turned on the TV, it was all gone.
All in all, I love it!
PROS:
Great picture
Great color
Looks good on or off
Sound is impressive for such small speakers
Lots of inputs
CONS:
Burn in after gaming or when watching sports (score board or news ticker)
Plasma uses alot of energy vs LCD
Plasma puts off alot of heat for a TV. Keep airflow open around TV
VERY heavy, need two people to move safely

Samsung HPT5064 50-Inch Plasma HDTV Specifications
Offering a rich feature set and exceptional quality for its price, Samsung HPT5064 50-inch 720p plasma TV uses the company’s latest DNIe enhancement circuitry to deliver outstanding brightness, contrast, and image clarity. Use it for home theater and use it for your PC–it’s perfect for both. In addition to a standard-broadcast NTSC tuner, it also features an integrated ATSC tuner that can capture over-the-air digital broadcasts from local network affiliates (the set will still require a set-top tuner for receiving non-terrestrial HD broadcasts from channels like HBO or Discovery). Other noteworthy features include a 60,000 hour panel life, Samsung’s unique auto pixel-shifting technology to prevent burn-in, a gaming mode, cinema progressive film mode, and 3 HDMI connections. This model is also compatible with an Auto wall-mount Samsung will release this year that is controllable in 3-dimensions via the HTDV’s own remote control.
Samsung currently offers two 50-inch 720p plasma models; this one and the lower priced HPT5054. this model is set apart from the HPT 4254 by its cosmetic design and by the inclusion of a USB 2.0 connection for playing photo files or MP3s. Both models offer the same high level of digital image processing, 15,000:1 contrast ratio, and HDMI connectivity. If you don’t need the USB connection, you may want ot consider the the HPT4254.
The Samsung Digital Natural Image engine (DNIe) Video Enhancer refines all analog NTSC and wideband video inputs for an overall improvement in picture quality. DNIe improves contrast, white level, picture detail and incorporates digital noise reduction to improve lower quality video inputs. Thanks to the new 13-bit processing capability of DNIe, the HP-S4253 can produce over 549 billion colors (compared to the one billion colors that TVs with 10-bit processing can produce.
Single-tuner Picture in Picture
This HDTV has a picture-in-picture feature, but it only has a single tuner which does not allow POP to function n the same mode. For example, you can’t watch one TV channel in the main screen and another channel in the PIP screen. You can watch a tv channel in one screen and view contnet from your computer or a DVD in another. This tends to be the functional limitation of PIP in most HDTVs currently available.

Watch Out – The Worst Experience – Unreliable and Poor Service. Shame on Samsung. – C. Ivry – Nyack, NY USA
Absolutely my worst experience with TV’s – ever. Sure, the picture is generally great, but too many problems and too many service calls. I got sucked in based on the glowing reviews and paid dearly for my mistake. My HPT5064 is barely 14 months old and the power supply board needs replacement!!! Of course it went just after the warranty had expired. No surge, no brownout – just gone. I called Samsung when it went dark and they kindly advised their factory authorized company, which was to contact me to schedule the appointment. Well, 3 days later I get a call informing me that a technician will be there in 5 days. Count that: we’re up to 8 days. The guy shows up, tests the unit and promptly informs me that I need a new power supply board. Total estimate: 0 plus tax. So here I am, faced with the attractive option of investing almost 0 in a unit which has already given me multiple audio and picture ghosting problems and which has never worked with HDMI. Why bother — I decided to cut my losses, paid the guy his minimum fee and will move on to a Sony, Pioneer or another reliable brand. Will sell this piece of junk to a refurbishing shop and will never look at another Samsung again.

Not bad at all! – E. Killian – New York, NY
This is a very good TV for the price! My mom has a Samsung and spent over ,000.00 on hers, and the quality of this one definitely outshines hers! I just upgraded to an HD cable box and the picture is very good. I gave this 4 starts because burn in and ghosting happens fairly easy on this TV. You have to be VERY careful if you are watching channels that have a logo on it for more than 40 minutes. I even have the contrast/brightness/color, etc. all below 50. My kids love to watch Nick, and I had the Nick logo stuck on my TV for days… (after watching for only 1 hour) Another time I was switching DVD’s and my DVD player was on and the word “Pioneer” was burned into the TV in bright pink for 3 days; it was left on screen for no longer than 2 minutes. Other than that…great deal! Great picture!

Samsung PN50A760 50-Inch 1080p Plasma HDTV with Red Touch of Color Review

I was originally going to buy a Kuro 50 inch plasma after looking at all the online reviews from many different sites. The Samsung 650 was also ranked very high, but there were some small negatives about the tv (some glare issues primarily) that had me holding off for the Kuro. Amazon originally had the Kuro for about 2k, but I didn’t pull the trigger quick enough, and then it went away, and I couldn’t find it anywhere for under ,500.
I wasn’t sure if I was going to go ahead and buy the 650 when I looked on Amazon one day and saw the new 50 inch 760 on sale for ,599.00. After reading some professional reviews on this product (there wasn’t a whole lot due to how new it was), I decided that this was an upgrade from the slightly older model, and decided to pull the trigger. Best decision I could have made! Not sure if experts still rank the Kuro higher than this television, but if they do, the Kuro must be out of this world, because this Samsung is UNBELIEVABLE. This is my first plasma tv purchase, and I was used to watching television on a 36″ Panasonic traditional tv, but after seeing the picture on the Samung, I was blown away. Watching sports on tv makes you feel as if you are at the event. The color is amazing, the tv looks nice, and the swivel on the stand allows me to turn the tv to face me when my wife isn’t around. It even makes bad movies good (think Spiderman 3), awful movie, but awesome special effects in high def! I think the sound was decent as well, but it didn’t have enough booming bass for me, so with the money I saved over the Kuro, I purchased a Denon soundbar to go along with the plasma to add better surround sound and booming bass. Now wherever I am seated in the room, I can turn my components to face me and enjoy a pretty good surround sound system. If you don’t want to add a surround sound system, this tv handled sound well, but as I say I was really looking for more booming bass when I watched movies. It would have been great if there was a way to add a subwoofer directly to this television, something the Kuro has, but not the Samsung.
There is a teeny glare on the OUTSIDE edge of the television on the part that is not actually the screen(not sure why Samsung made it almost a mirror like edge), but nothing that is too distracting, and I got used to it pretty quickly. I have this in my living room which gets very little light when the shades are closed, but even with lights on, or during the day, the glare issue on this tv is not noticeable. I was a little leary given past Samsung reviews, but I can tell you that if possible glare is holding you back from buying this tv, don’t think twice about it…not an issue. Also, you can watch this tv from anywhere in the room and see it clearly. The controls on the remote are extremely functionable, and everything is VERY easy to setup and tweak.
The other part of this purchase that is EXTREMELY important, and should be emphasized, is the process of buying DIRECTLY through Amazon.com. As long it is directly through Amazon.com (and not through an affiliate), shipping is included in the price, and the company handling the deliveries is TOP NOTCH. When I initially looked around for purchase possibilities, the thing that bothered me was that most companies had a policy where they would deliver the plasma to your front door only. You had to open the box, make sure that it worked, and then sign for it. If there was any type of problem, some would tell you to refuse delivery, and others would tell you that you had to get it fixed through the warranty process! The last thing I wanted to do was to get a defective set, and then have to get someone here to fix it! When I went with Amazon.com, the company delivering for them brought the plasma into my house, took it out of the box, put it on the open table, hooked it up, put batteries in the remote, setup the initial configuration, and made sure that it was working fine BEFORE I signed for it. This piece of mind often called “white glove service” elsewhere costing anywhere from 0 – 0 additional dollars was ABSOLUTELY free with Amazon.com. I can’t stress enough how important this was. I had read about this service beforehand, and it was a primary reason (along with cost) as to why I was pretty much holding off until I found the right television on Amazon. This service alone made my purchase through Amazon.com worth the price over other services, but the price was also also at the lower range of ANYWHERE else. A friend of mine owns an electronics store, and told me point blank that he doesn’t understand how Amazon.com can price merchandise the way they do it, but he had heard good things about them, and although it would hurt him by recommending Amazon.com, he told me to buy from them if the price was right.
I highly recommend this television as well as purchasing from Amazon.com. The final way you know how happy I am with this purchase is to keep the following in mind….I RARELY spend the time to enter reviews after purchases, but I was so happy with this purchase, that I couldn’t wait to share my experience with everyone on Amazon.com

The perfect TV – W. Mate – Beverly Hills, CA USA
My whole family is in love with this TV. After looking at any number of TVs, on display and those owned by neighbors and friends, we chose the Samsung and haven’t looked back. There are all kinds of input options, including quite a few HDMI inputs, which means that video components and game consoles can all stay plugged in without any juggling around, and the cord keeper on the back of the set keeps the cables all but entirely out of sight.
The picture quality is terrific, especially for sports events, and the sound quality, while not able to match surround sound, is perfectly acceptable.
The one caveat is the Touch of Color. It happens to works very well in our room, but might not be for everyone. The red color borders the black in the clear edges around the base and picture frame, and is very contemporary and cool looking, but is actually not that noticeable. Samsung told me that some people rig a can light behind the set to make the red effect more noticeable. The one aspect of the Touch of Color with which I was unaware is the red cast to the screen. When you are used to big black screens, it’s a bit of a surprise. Although it is not terribly noticeable when the TV is on, it is quite evident when the TV is off and might not work with every style of decor. Whether or not it was designed to do so, the red cast is actually very helpful in reducing screen glare if your TV happens to catch any glare from daylight coming into the room.
All in all, this is a beautiful set with great quality and options for picture fit that increase with the type of cable used (HDMI having the most options and the best picture quality). The TV and remote are very easy to figure out, so much so that you hardly need the manual. In addition, Samsung customer service was helpful, very knowledgeable and seemed happy to walk me through whatever questions I had about the set.
We could not be any happier with this purchase.

The Samsung PNA760 50″ plasma television is amazing and Amazon White Glove delivery is top notch.
The White Gloves Delivery man and I unpack the television, placed it atop my entertainment center, plug it end, and turned it on. The picture was incredible without any adjustments. We currently have 4 flat screen televisions in our home, two LCDs and two Plasmas. Although the LCDs are excellent televisions, they pale in comparison to the two plasmas. The primary differences are motion blur and black level.
My only negative comment concerning the PNA760 50″ plasma is reflection glare. Probably would not want to place this Television in a brightly lighted room without heavy curtains to block out ambient light sources while viewing. In a dark room this television is perfect in all aspects. I highly recommend Amazon’s white glove delivery too.

Samsung FPT5094W 50-Inch 1080p Wireless Plasma HDTV Review

I bought this television in July. Let me just start by saying that the television is AWESOME for watching television and DVDS/BDs. I have it going through my Sony receiver, which has 4 HDMI inputs, and the ability to add audio delay. Sooooo… that being said, I don not have the problem with not being able to connect enough devices to the tv. I bought it for that very reason…I don’t want a bunch of wires/cables goiing to the tv as it hangs on the wall! So I have 3 HDMI devices going to the Sony receiver, and 1 HDMI output from the Sony to the tv transmitter…I never have to change the tv input device… just the receiver input device. Now, add this all to the Harmony One remote and it works perfectly!
I also don’t have the problem with gaming delays because I simply don’t hook the games (PS3, WII, 360) to the system…I use my 72-inch Samsung TV (which cost less initially on Amazon, now goes for 3,999.00)for that!!!!

Wireless died after a year – J. Higbee – VA
Purchased this TV abou a year ago. Great picture, but always took awhile for wireless to sync. Now get cannot connect error. Called Samsung servie and was told that I had to take entire unit to service center. This thing is huge. Also, rough estiamte to repair wireless unit is 0+. For a 00 set, this is not good after only a year.
Don’t buy – Carlos A. Ibarra – Miami, FL USA
I bought this TV for my bedroom wall on October 2008.
The TV only needs a power connection. The video is sent wirelessly from a base unit. You plug all the cables into this base unit.
I regret buying it because:
1. It takes about 10 seconds to connect to the base unit every time you turn it on.
2. Every a couple of hours or so, or at random times, it loses the video connection to the base unit, and it takes about 10 seconds to reconnect. During this time, you are missing your program or movie or whatever. Very annoying.
3. It makes a buzzing sound that is very loud in my quiet bedroom at night.
Next time I am buying a wired TV and probably not a plasma if they all make this buzzing noise.
